WEC Additional Team Quota Framework
Effective: 2025-2026 Competition Cycle and Beyond
Overview
To accommodate growing school interest while maintaining academic standards, WEC offers qualified institutions two pathways to secure additional team placements beyond the standard 3-team allocation.
Universal Eligibility Requirement
ALL schools must meet this baseline criteria:
- Minimum enrollment: 150+ students (school-wide, not economics club)
Track A: Merit History Track
Performance History Pathway
What It Is
Automatic additional quota for schools with proven WEC excellence
Eligibility Criteria
Schools meeting BOTH requirements receive automatic approval:
| Requirement | Criteria |
|---|---|
| Historical Participation | 18 or above students participated in the previous year's WEC Continental Qualifier |
| Performance Standard | The average of top 18 students achieved 75+ |
Note: For schools that participated with more than 18 students (e.g., 24 or 30 students due to additional spots), evaluation is based on the average of the top 18 performing students. This ensures consistent evaluation criteria regardless of prior year's team allocation.
How It Works
- Fully automated - no application needed
- System auto-calculates previous year's performance
- Eligible schools receive notification automatically
- Additional spot granted immediately upon qualification
What You Receive
+1 team spot → Total: 4 teams (24 students)
The submitted entry materials can also be used for EAE's Club awards and recognitions, allowing your school to gain both additional team quota and E-Club honors from the same campus engagement effort.
Rationale
Recognizes sustained institutional excellence and sufficient talent pool depth. When the average of top 18 students consistently achieves 75+, it demonstrates quality student population deserving expanded opportunities.
Track B: Campus Engagement Track
Current Year Engagement Pathway
What It Is
Reward for schools actively building WEC programs through substantial internal initiatives
Eligibility Options
Schools must organize ONE of the following:
- Option 1: Internal WEC selection competition
- Option 2: Dedicated WEC club/chapter establishment
AND engage 60+ participants in these activities
Application Procedure
-
Establish WEC Club Entry
Create official WEC club entry in EAE's E-Club system
-
Submit Activity Report
Under your registered club, submit comprehensive activity report documenting:
- Visual Evidence: Photos of activities/competition
- Participant Verification: Proof of 60+ student engagement
- Activity Details: Process, timeline, and execution summary
- Results Documentation: Competition outcomes or club milestones
-
Review & Approval
- WEC Organizing Committee conducts manual review
- Approval notification sent upon verification
What You Receive
+1 team spot → Total: 4 teams (24 students)
Rationale
Encourages schools to develop robust economics education programs and demonstrates current-year investment in WEC ecosystem growth.
Framework Rules
Maximum Benefit Limit
- Schools may qualify for a maximum of 2 tracks per year
- This limit applies even as additional tracks/pathways may be introduced in future competition cycles
- Maximum total allocation under current framework: 5 teams (30 students)
Pathway Selection Guide
| Your Situation | Recommended Track |
|---|---|
| 18 or above students competed in last year's Continental Qualifier, average of top 18 achieved 75+ | Merit History Track (Auto-granted) |
| Building new WEC program with 60+ participants | Campus Engagement Track (Apply) |
| Both criteria met | Apply for Campus Engagement (Merit History auto-granted) |
Quota Calculation
| Qualification Status | Total Teams | Total Students |
|---|---|---|
| Standard allocation | 3 teams | 18 students |
| + Merit History Track | 4 teams | 24 students |
| + Campus Engagement Track | 4 teams | 24 students |
| + Both tracks approved | 5 teams | 30 students |
Historical Participation Clarification
"Previous year" means:
- Students participated in the immediately preceding WEC Continental Qualifier
- Performance data from the last completed competition cycle
- Each year, eligibility is assessed based on the single most recent year's data
Quick Reference

- 18 or above participants in previous year's Continental Qualifier
- The average of top 18 students achieved 75+
- No application needed
Campus Engagement Track (Apply):
- 60+ current year participants
- Internal competition OR club
- Register club in EAE's E-Club system

Merit History Track Qualification Rate
Qualification Criteria:
- School must have 18 or above students participate in previous year's Continental Qualifier
- The average of top 18 students must achieve 75+
Historical Qualification Rate:
| Metric | Percentage |
|---|---|
| Schools meeting BOTH criteria | 5.6% |
This represents schools that achieved:
- 18 or above students participated
- The average of top 18 students achieved 75+ in previous year's Continental Qualifier
Selectivity Analysis
| Assessment Level | Description |
|---|---|
| Selectivity Tier | ELITE |
| Qualification Rate | Top 5.6% of schools |
The dual requirement of:
- 18 or above students participated, AND
- The average of top 18 students achieved 75+
Creates an ELITE qualification threshold that recognizes schools with both:
- Institutional commitment (full participation)
- Consistent performance quality (strong team average)
Performance Context
Individual vs. Team Achievement
Individual Level:
- 52.7% of individual students score 75 or above
Team Level (average of top 18 students achieving 75+):
- 5.6% of schools achieve this standard
Why Team Averages Are More Selective
Achieving a 75+ average of the top 18 students requires:
- Consistent strength across the entire team
- Institutional depth and quality
- No significant weak performers
- Sustainable program excellence
While more than half of individual students can score 75+, maintaining this average of the top 18 students is significantly more challenging and represents genuine institutional excellence.
Summary
The 75+ average threshold with the top 18-student evaluation creates:
- Elite selectivity (5.6% qualification rate)
- Achievable merit recognition (not impossibly exclusive)
- Dual validation (participation + performance)
- Institutional excellence (team depth required)
This threshold rewards schools that demonstrate both commitment to WEC participation and consistent student performance across their full team.
